"You study at GJAR and got into LPC UWC in Hong Kong?"
"What? Like, it’s hard?"
Hello everyone!
My name is Alex Kanderka and I am a 17-year-old high school student from Prešov, Slovakia. Outside of school, I am also a passionate scientist and researcher, science enthusiast, politics devotee, volunteer, traveler, Beyoncé fan, and animal lover. I strive to be a good friend as well.
Make yourself at home on my website!
I am currently a sophomore at the Grammar School of Jan Adam Rayman (GJAR) in Presov, Slovakia. Before this, I attended Majove Namestie Primary School in Presov, Slovakia for five years. At GJAR, I am enrolled in the general secondary curriculum (7902 J 00), with a particular passion for the sciences, especially biology, chemistry, physics, and IT.
Here is my latest timetable for your reference:

Becoming part of the United World College (UWC) schools and movement has been my dream for a long time. It is an international network of 18 schools on 4 continents with International Baccalaureate (IB) educational programme.
UWC is also a global movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
I was selected and nominated by the Slovak National Committee (NC) to study at the Li Po Chun United World College (LPC UWC) in New Territories, Hong Kong. It is an ideal match for me due to its STEM focus, the Quan Cai Program encouraging student-led initiatives and community service, and the opportunity to immerse in Chinese culture during Project Week. Plus, its serene location offers a balance of nature and city life.
Here are the subjects I will be covering during the two-year IB programme:
*HL = higher level, SL = standard level
Since I was a child, I have been fascinated by science and dreamed of becoming a scientist. In the 7th grade, I started my first research project for AMAVET's Festival of Science and Technology, the Mpemba effect and the properties of different liquids. After that, I conducted a study on how light pollution affects the observation of the Perseids meteor shower.
For the past three years, I have been working on my most important research project: finding a sustainable method to remove and break down polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are highly toxic and carcinogenic chemicals. Currently, I am an intern at the Department of Microbiology at Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice, where we use various microbiological and molecular biology methods.
I have also gained experience from other institutions, including CEITEC VUT and ÚCB Mendel University in Brno, Czechia (CEITEC Student Talent Summer School), as well as FCHPT STU in Bratislava and FAPZ SPU in Nitra, Slovakia.
In the future, I aspire to work in translational medical research, focusing on developing biosensors with application in the fields of tropical medicine and/or psychiatry.
When it comes to languages, English has been a passion of mine since kindergarten. This year marks my 10th year at Be Up private language school, and I am currently preparing for the C1 Advanced CAE English certificate.
Additionally, since starting my studies at GJAR, I have taken up French, attending extra courses after school. I am presently enrolled at the Alliance Française at the University of Prešov and am awaiting results from the DELF B2 exam.
Furthermore, I am also learning Mandarin through the HSK1 and HSK2 courses at the Confucius Institute at Comenius University in Bratislava (online).
In the future, my goal is to become proficient in all the UN official languages, which means I need to study Arabic, Spanish, and Russian.
In terms of volunteering, I actively participate in the annual Atletic Festival for children with Down syndrome in Prešov. This event allows me to engage with children, an activity I thoroughly enjoy, while also promoting mutual understanding. Additionally, I am a member of both the GJAR Green School and the GJAR without Hatred programs.
In the summer of 2023, I had the opportunity to participate in the UWC Umoja Short Course in Moshi and Arusha, Tanzania. During this course, we explored various topics ranging from environmental issues to community building.
After the course, I engaged in a community project at a local daycare center and helped organize workshops and a conference for local high school girls, focusing on the importance of gender equality.
From May 11-17, 2024, we took part in the world’s largest pre-college STEM competition, Regeneron ISEF, held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Our project, MARS-PCBs: Microbially Assisted Remediation of Stabilized Polychlorinated Biphenyls, in the Environmental Engineering category (ENEV) showcased our innovative and cost-efficient remediation technique. Although we did not win any award, the experience was invaluable, and I forged lifelong friendships with peers from Slovakia, Czechia, and Switzerland.
From September 13-15, 2023, my friend Jozef Jabczun and I participated in the largest European science fair, EUCYS, presenting our project Remediation of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Heavy Metals via Sustainable Removal Techniques in the Environment category. Our project focused on testing various approaches to combat land pollution. We were thrilled to win 3rd place overall.
